Moving from one place to another is not at all a cheap affair, so it’s advisable that you make an estimate of your moving expenses beforehand. Then you can plan accordingly. Hiring a moving company may be very expensive, but then it depends on how far you have to move.

It’s quite helpful to get estimates from moving companies. Charges are generally calculated on the basis of the volume and weight of the goods to be moved, the distance over which the move has to take place, packing, services and other costs such as labour, wear and tear on the vehicles, etc. Get detailed estimates from two or three good moving companies. Here are a few tips that’ll help you effectively estimate the cost of your move:

  • A reputed moving firm will want to inspect your belongings before giving you any figures. If a company isn’t thorough in its inspection or says that an inspection isn’t necessary, then preferably go with someone else.
  • Make sure that you make a list of everything you want moved so that there are no confusions later. Highlight items requiring special attention (electronics, special equipment, pianos, etc.) and make sure that appropriate arrangements are made for them.
  • Ensure that everything you intend to have moved is shown to the movers during the inspection so that a correct estimate is formed.
  • Provide as much information about the source and destination as possible. Be clear on what the estimate includes, and what it doesn’t. If you’re not careful, you may end up having to pay much more than the original estimate.
  • Movers generally don’t provide insurance of goods being moved unless they pack themselves. Keep this in mind.
  • Moving companies may quote their estimate on the basis of cubic feet (volume). This method has generally found to be quite inaccurate, so try to avoid it. It’s better to get estimates on the basis of the actual weight of the goods.
  • You may get better deals if your move is scheduled for the off-season.
  • Consider carefully: Is it necessary to travel by flight, or would driving be ok. Flights are quite costly, and they will add to your budget.
  • Make sure you get a full official estimate prepared, detailing parameters such as number of boxes to be moved, the value and size of objects, and the cost of other services. Beware of companies offering a very low rate; they may be out there to cheat you!

If you find the estimate within your budget, and the company is verified by the BBB, then go ahead and plan your move with them. Hopefully you won’t face too many problems.
